How does it work?

The D8 serves as both a “temporary stay” and a “residence visa” for digital nomads.

TEMPORARY STAY
This option allows you to live in Portugal for up to 1 year and allows you multiple entrees into the country. However it does not Grant the right to claim a residence permit and cannot be exteded.

RESIDENCE VISA
This is a two-entry residency visa valid for four months that allows obtaining a residence permit upon arrivel in Portugal. It enables the holder to secure a residence permit for two years, renewable for 3 year periods. Afte 5 years it can be converted into permanent residence or citizenship.

Residents under this permit need not to leave Portugal for more than 6 months in a row or 8 months in total during the PR validity period.

The Portuguese consulate will request a binding opinion from the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Entity (AIMA). In aproximately 60 days they will give a final answer.

The local consulate will stamp a temporary D8 visa on the applicants passport

The applicant travels to Portugal under the D8 temporary visa and waits for the final visit to the immigration department to convert the temporary visa to a final D8 residence visa.

After this appointment, the Residence Visa card is mailed to the Address of the applicant

Family Reunification

Members of the family of the holder of the residence permit obtained via a D8 visa are also entitled to a residence permit, based on family reunification statute. For this VISA are elligible spouses, children up to 30 years old and financially dependent parents.

To add family members to the visa application you must show sufficent savings:

- Extra 3132€ per child;

- Extra 5220€ per adult
